Last autumn saw the start of the ‘OpeningUp’ project, bringing together artists Kevin Cameron and Gillian Steel with a smorgasbord of community groups to creatively explore barriers to access in Inverurie.
A short film capturing the participants’ thoughts and desires is now complete, and will be used as a discussion tool with local businesses and service providers to highlight good practice and suggest ways to improve access where needed. Although the film is a key element of the project, 150 people took part in arts workshops from November to January, giving their opinions a voice through animation, drawing, sound recording, writing and video. Workshops were open to many community groups including mental health improvement, older people, adults with learning difficulties, brain injury, and parent and child groups.
OpeningUp has been spearheaded by the Inverurie Mental Health Improvement Group with monies from Aberdeenshire Council’s Arts Development and Community Planning Teams, and the national See Me anti stigma campaign. It is part of ongoing work into mental health improvement by Arts Development and Community Planning that will be developed across Aberdeenshire over the next year.
