The final round of submissions for both the Aberdeenshire Visual Artists’ Awards Scheme and the Craft Makers Award: Aberdeenshire will be 16 February 2010.
The schemes have supported a diverse range of activity by Aberdeenshire’s local practitioners, enabling some to improve techniques, others to advance their skills, create new work or develop their practise in terms of scale and national recognition.
Both initiatives are jointly funded by Aberdeenshire Council and the Scottish Arts Council.
Saskia Gibbon, Aberdeenshire Council arts development officer, said, “The award schemes are one way of showing our commitment to supporting resident practitioners and they have had a significant impact on local artists to date.”
Recent recipients in the current round of funding include Portsoy-based ceramicist Kerstin Gren, sculptor Carn Standing, Alford visual artist Fergus Connor, film maker Johnny Burnett and jeweller Jenny Mathias.
The awards schemes offer up to a maximum of £1,000.
A priority of the Craft Makers Award is to support the development of practitioners involved in contemporary ceramics, furniture and wood, glass, jewellery and metalwork, lettering, musical instruments, textiles and basket-making.
Visual artists can apply for assistance with the immediate costs of researching, creating and presenting new work or advancing skills and ideas.
Applications to the schemes are assessed by an independent panel. Consideration is given to the quality of the applicant’s work and supporting information, the likely benefit that will be gained, the clarity of the submission, value for money and a demonstrated commitment by the artist to their art form or craft.
